A One-night Autumn Stay At A Bed and Breakfast In The White Mountains of Arizona

The historic Heritage Inn in Snowflake, AZ.

Saturday, September 29, 2007

An OPMC event organized and led By Richard and Susan Olsen (all credit goes to Susan for her great organization).

We had seven cars (14 people) from OPMC and one car (two people) from the Phoenix area Sahuaro Miata Club participate in this fun event.  The weather for this event was absolutely perfect and the top-down drive up to the Inn at Snowflake was scenic and enjoyable.  The Inn is lovely and the town of Snowflake is quaint and charming.  All bedrooms in the Inn (a late-1800s historic pioneer home) are lavishly decorated in period antiques and decor, as are all other rooms in the Inn.  Our Miata group arrived in mid-afternoon on Saturday, and after checking in were escorted on a tour of two historic homes in the neighborhood.  Following the very interesting tour, we assembled on the back patio for a pre-dinner get-together with appropriate libations and snacks.  At 6:30 PM the Inn owner and his staff prepared a grilled steak dinner for our group which we all enjoyed.  The next morning we all also enjoyed a full buffet breakfast at the Inn with the special added Inn specialty of "German Babies" pastry (ask someone who was there to describe them for you).  After the filling breakfast, many of us participated in a special private tour of the antique store and upstairs meeting hall next door to the Inn (owned by the same folks who operate the Inn).  At 10 AM those of us heading back to Tucson (some stayed over a second night at the Inn) drove south through Show Low and on to Pinetop to attend a free antique and collector car show.  While some of the show participants had left with their cars by the time we arrived, most of the nearly 600 or so cars were still there for us to ogle and lust after.

Historic Flake family pioneer home in left two photos.  The gentleman kneeling in the center photo is from the Flake Family and grew up in the house.  Recently constructed and lavishly furnished meeting hall on the right.

Photos from the car show.

The two cars on the left are reproductions of the famous Ford GT40s that won Le Mans in the mid-1960s (these modern reproductions cost around $150,000 to buy in recent years).  The black Shelby Cobra is (I believe) an authentic original 1965 model now worth around a half-million dollars.

We hope to add more photos from this event.  Stay tuned!
