Silver City, New Mexico
9/17-9/19
Beginning September 17 we have a 3 day / 2 night trip to Silver
City, NM with great Miata roads and sightseeing each day.
Friday 9/17: Meet at
the SW corner of Houghton and I-10 at 9:00 AM for a 9:15 AM
departure. After lunch in Safford we be traversing the Apache Nat.
Forrest through Mule Creek then detour north to the Whitewater
picnic area for a break with an optional hike along the canyon on
the catwalk. From there we proceed to the Holiday Inn Express in
Silver City when we'll be sharing the facilities with the El Paso
Corvette Club. For dinner we'll eat at Shevek (Judy's favorite) in
the historic downtown.
Saturday 9/18: We wind our way through the
Gila Forrest to the GIla Cliff Dwelling National Monument
and glimpse into the homes and lives of the people who lived in this
area over 700 years ago. Lunch is at Breathe Inn (known to the
locals as 'Jack's place') near Lake Roberts. We return to Silver
City by way of Mimbres by early afternoon to allow time to explore
on your own the historic downtown shops and art galleries. Also, the
Silver City Museum is quite interesting.
Sunday 9/19: For those who
want to bypass the complimentary hotel breakfast for something
better, breakfast is at Vicki's Eatery in downtown. Saving the best
Miata road for last, we head east over the Mimbres mountains to
Hillsboro where we'll stop for a short visit at this semi-ghost
town. Finally we have a short stop at the Lake Valley ghost town
(population 2) and it's restored school house before heading home
returning late afternoon.
The Holiday Inn at Silver City has blocked a set of 15 rooms
for 09/17/10 – 09/19/10 at a discounted rate of $89.95 to folks who
identify themselves as part of the Old Pueblo Miata Club (or we may
be listed as Tucson Miata Club) at time of booking. You may call the
hotel direct at 575-538-2525, or 800-HOLIDAY to book rooms. The
cutoff for the discounted rate is 9/3 and we also need a head count
by this same date for lunch reservations at Jack's place.
